OUR STORY

Our firm is designed to be different.  Our women-founded, people-centered, boutique legal + strategy firm is a team with more than 60 years of health law + strategy experience practicing in a manner that allows us greater flexibility to provide value and tailor our services to the ever-changing needs of our clients.  Our team has extensive background in a variety of healthcare legal settings – as equity partners in some of the world’s largest multidisciplinary law firms, as chief compliance officer to a 3 hospital children’s healthcare system, as general counsel to the lead agency for Medicaid, facility regulation, and health planning in Georgia, as outside general counsel to a 90+ member hospital association, and as state legal and executive director for certificates of need. 

We are trusted thought partners and advisors who work collaboratively with our clients to navigate the complex and dynamic legal framework governing healthcare.  We enjoy client relationships lasting decades because we understand the value to our clients of truly knowing their business and we draw upon our deep subject matter expertise and collaborative approach to provide exceptional client service.  

We founded HLS because we believe both the legal industry and healthcare industry are at inflection points.  We do not believe the current state of the legal industry – which focuses more on profits per equity partner rather than building sustainable client service teams – is aligned with our clients’ best business interests.  Further, law firm consolidation has led to healthcare being viewed as an industry offering rather than a core practice area in many firms.  At HLS, our industry focus and core practice is healthcare, and we partner with a broad network of other subject matter counsel as needed.  We are moving to an integrated legal + strategic advisor model as the health care industry continues to evolve and shift to a health platform model built on collaboration and partnerships, value-based care, and patient access at home and in alternative care settings. Innovation is happening across the healthcare spectrum from providers and payors to digital health companies, which demands the forward-thinking creative solutions our team can provide.
